If you are a beginner or a powerful opponent you might consider going to a prerelease. Prereleases are, as you may have guessed, releases of cards before they are for sale. At a prerelease, you get the following: 6 booster packs, 1 spindown life counter, 1 promotional card, and at least 1 prize booster pack. Your local Wizards Play Network store may have additional prizes so contact them for more information. At a prerelease you make a 40 card deck, you are able to have it with more cards, for example you could have a 60 card deck like in standard, but you might not have enough of the right cards to make a deck with over 40 cards, and don't worry about not having any mana, basic lands are usually supplied by your store, so you can just borrow them and give them back afterwards.
Prereleases are a wonderful way to make friends and learn the rules better!
